Police stop intoxicated drivers: alcohol and drugs on the road!

In Wilhelmshaven, the police caused a stir last weekend when several intoxicated drivers were pulled out of traffic. Officers from the local police station carried out extensive checks, with both alcohol and drugs being involved. The measures aim to ensure road safety and minimize the dangers posed by addictive substances.

On Saturday morning, July 12, 2025, at 7 a.m., a 30-year-old van driver was negatively affected in Ladestrasse. During the check it turned out that he was under the influence of amphetamine and did not have a valid driver's license. This led to the initiation of criminal proceedings for driving without a license and under the influence of drugs. A blood sample was ordered and the driver was banned from driving.

Drinking and drug driving

Just twenty minutes later, another man was checked on Emsstrasse. He was also driving his car under the influence of drugs – specifically cannabis. In this case too, further travel was stopped and a blood test was ordered. The police want to counteract a serious problem with such checks because, according to the ADAC, drug use and driving pose a significant risk to road safety. Even small amounts of illegal substances in the blood are banned, and penalties range from fines to imprisonment of up to five years if they endanger other road users.

On the night of Saturday to Sunday, around 1 a.m., a patrol car noticed a car in the pedestrian zone on Marktstrasse. The 35-year-old driver stood at an intersection despite the green light at the stop sign and refused to move. A breath alcohol test showed an alarming 1.89 per mille, which not only put his driver's license at risk, but also led to criminal proceedings for drunk driving. Here too, a blood sample was taken and the journey was prohibited.

Legal situation and consequences

On Sunday morning, around 10:45 a.m., the police discovered another case. The 36-year-old driver on Gökerstrasse was choking on drugs. Despite poor signs, he refused preliminary tests, which led to a blood test. This not only causes significant financial damage, as the costs for a drug-driving case can quickly reach several thousand euros. In addition, the probationary period for novice drivers is extended and there is a risk of severe penalties, as explained in detail by the police under the heading “Drugs in traffic”.

The ADAC is therefore calling for increased education and controls in road traffic in order to prevent such behavior. In this context, it becomes clear that drugs are not only risky for the perpetrator, but above all affect the safety of all road users. A medical-psychological examination (MPU) may also be required after drug use and driving license revocation, which represents an additional hurdle for those affected.

The current controls in Wilhelmshaven are a clear sign that the security authorities in northern Germany are taking the issue seriously and are taking active action. The danger of drug driving – be it illegal substances or alcoholic beverages – should be taken seriously by everyone.
