Wilhelmshaven's Windhosen” dominate at the Ultimate Frisbee Championship!
What an exciting addition! The “Windhosen” from WSSV Wilhelmshaven made a huge impression at the recent North German Ultimate Frisbee Championships in Göttingen and Oldenburg. The U14 team performed impressively and secured their fourth title in a row. At the same time, the U17 team became runner-up, which underlines the achievements of the young athletes in this rapidly growing sport. This shows that the sport of Ultimate Frisbee is gaining more and more attention not only regionally, but also nationally.
A total of two U14 teams took part in the tournament, divided into an experienced and a less experienced team. Under the coaching trio consisting of Thomas Kurth, Mascha Gatzke and Willy Marx, they mobilized 20 children for the competitions. The U14 A team left the tournament undefeated, while the B team, after a close first game, showed flashes of potential in a duel against their club colleagues, but ultimately lost in the “Universe”. Nevertheless, they ended their tournament with a clear victory over Hamburg and secured fourth place.
Successes of the club's youth
The U17 team fought hard and ended up in second place after an unfortunate division of points with Kiel/Lübeck. Another highlight was the U20 A team, which emerged as North German champions in its two matches against Osnabrück. These successes make it clear that the “Windhosen” will be represented in all three age categories at the German Championships next September.
But it's not just the WSSV youth who fight hard for victories. At the Franziskusschule in Wilhelmshaven, the “Franz Discus Teams” also achieved considerable success during the school championship in June 2023 – two second places and one third place! For the coming school year 2023/24, two regular working groups for Ultimate Frisbee are planned, one for the 6th grade with nine students under the leadership of Willy Marx and Mathis Kurth, both former U-17 national players.
