Future of the raised bed garden in Wilhelmshaven: daycare benefits!
Happy news from Wilhelmshaven! The raised bed garden on Gotthilf-Hagen-Platz has now found a new support: the Wiki. This takeover was urgently needed because the previous project “Wilhelms Urbanfarm” under the Wilhelmshaven Economic Development Agency expires on November 30th. Without a new sponsor, the garden project would unfortunately have had to be discontinued. The gardening community is now relieved and optimistic about the future, as the new framework offers a wide range of possibilities.
“We had a good hand in recruiting new staff,” says the facility manager of the “Südstern” daycare center, Doris Bröcker. The daycare center will benefit significantly from the new sponsorship as it already has experience in gardening and plant science. Together with the Wiki, the daycare center will not only design new jumping games for the city center, but also discover how food grows in the raised bed garden. These learning experiences extend far beyond kindergarten.
A space for generations
The raised bed garden helps promote intergenerational relationships. In addition to the daycare center, the garden community is also involved in the care and planting. The Wiki covers the costs of repairs, which benefits sustainable collaboration. Such initiatives show how urban gardening in Germany can transform gray areas into green oases by strengthening local food production and community, as well as on Sustainability Action Day is executed.
With every groundbreaking, urban gardening also brings ecological benefits. These gardens improve the microclimate, provide habitat for insects and promote biodiversity in cities. Citizens not only learn how plants grow, but also actively participate in environmental protection - a step in the right direction in times of climate change.
A network for everyone
In the collaboration between the “Südstern” daycare center and the gardening community, the social dimension of urban gardening cannot be overlooked. It not only enables exchange between different age groups, but also between cultures. This corresponds to the approach that community gardens in Germany have pursued since their creation in the 19th century: to be places of encounter and education. This is how it is done Greenthumb Path pointed out how important this initiative is for social interaction.
Concern about space is one of the challenges that urban gardening brings with it. Current urbanization is leading to surface sealing and the loss of natural retreat spaces. Nevertheless, the experience of the garden community in Wilhelmshaven shows that it is possible to bring nature back into the city.
The garden community warmly thanked the project managers Juliane Heimann and Jennifer Renner with bouquets of flowers. In the future, Juliane will contribute her knowledge of Wilhelmshaven tourism and leisure. The raised bed garden is a sign of hope and change, and the collaboration between the daycare center and Wiki will certainly enrich the attitude to life on Gotthilf-Hagen-Platz.
