New trainer, modern stadium: VfL Wolfsburg is investing in the future!

Wolfsburg, Deutschland - Paul Simonis has the reins at VfL Wolfsburg in his hand. The new trainer is impressed by the Volkswagen Arena, which was opened in 2002 and cost a proud 53 million euros. With over 28,000 places, the arena is a real piece of jewelry in Wolfsburg. But that's not all; The arena is also modernized and optimized to meet the requirements of the future. VfL acquired the arena a year ago by Wolfsburg AG and can now cost a big project.

Currently the installation of a new play area is on the program: a hybrid turf that consists of natural grass and plastic fibers should shape the field in the future. The lawn work costs about two million euros. In addition, an innovative plastic filter system is installed to prevent microplastics from getting into the groundwater. This measure not only reflects the trend towards sustainability, but is also regarded as part of the association's efforts to deal responsibly with the environment. VfL Wolfsburg has already asked the DFL whether the new season can begin with an away game because the completion of the work is uncertain.

an award for sustainability

VfL Wolfsburg receives a third -placed award at the Essma Stadium Industry Award in the "Sustainability" category for its efforts in the area of sustainability. This honor was awarded on April 22, 2024, the Earth Day 2024. Under the motto "Planet vs. Plastics", the association wants to raise awareness of climate change and the value of the earth. Nico Briskorn, head of corporate social responsibility at the wolves, underlines the association's commitment to a clean environment.

The “Microplasty Filter” project, which was developed in cooperation with the Berlin start-up Gupyfriend, is particularly worth mentioning. This filter ensures that around 90 percent of the microplastics released do not get into the wastewater. It helps to reduce the plastic granulate on the hybrid turf and to minimize the microplastics pollution when washing training clothing and jerseys. The microplastic reduction concept is perfectly accorded with the club's biodiversity initiative, since VfL Wolfsburg also joined the "Sport for Nature" initiative in August 2023.

The modernization of the Volkswagen Arena

But these are not the only changes that are imminent in the Volkswagen Arena. The entire range of seats will be renewed in the coming months because the old shells have had its day after 23 years. At the same time, the technology is modernized on the video hall, which is intended to significantly improve the audience experience. These comprehensive measures aim to make the club future -proof and to make even more attractive for fans.

In the past, VfL Wolfsburg already performed strong services when operating its hybrid drass systems. At the 2016/2017 season, the VW Arena was able to celebrate second place in the Pitch-of-the-Year Award, and in the seasons 2018/19 and 2020/2021, the Greenkeeper team climbed first place with the hybrid turf. The installation of the same system on the training places next to the arena ensures optimal conditions, because how do you say so beautifully? The VfL has a good hand with its lawn!

With these comprehensive measures, VfL Wolfsburg takes on a pioneering role in the field of sustainability in football and sets an example for other clubs. In the sense of environmental protection and modern stadium operation, the wolves look excitedly into a green and successful future.
