Wolfsburg's Seelt change shocks Nijmegen: trouble after deadline day!

What was going on on deadline day? Jenson Seelt's move to VfL Wolfsburg continues to cause a lot of excitement, especially at NEC Nijmegen. The central defender, who was originally supposed to move from Sunderland to Nijmegen, was suddenly seen in the green Wolfsburg jersey. This caused anger among those responsible at the Dutch club.

Wilco van Schaik, managing director of NEC Nijmegen, spoke to ESPN Netherlands about the unexpected turn of events. Originally there were already verbal agreements between NEC and Sunderland regarding the transfer of Seelt in connection with the change of goalkeeper Robin Roefs. Roefs moved to Sunderland at the beginning of August for a fee of 10.5 million euros and it was thought Seelt would follow. But on Sunday Nijmegen received notification that the move would not take place because Seelt could not be transferred due to injury.

An unexpected change

The surprising news came on Friday: Seelt could move to Wolfsburg on loan. This was done to replace the injured Denis Vavro and provided Wolfsburg with a much-needed reinforcement. Seelt was the first of two loan signings for the club that day.

However, Seelt, who made 21 appearances for Sunderland last season and was signed for €2 million, has struggled with injuries this season. After playing in the first three games of the season for Sunderland, he was only able to play once again due to health problems.

Nijmegen is angry

Given the unclear situation, Carlos Aalbers, Nijmegen's technical director, is also quite upset. He publicly regrets the sale of goalkeeper Roefs to Sunderland and has even sent the club a text message expressing his dismay at current events. Nijmegen did not find a short-term alternative for Seelt and now finds itself in an awkward position.

The entire incident raises questions about the professionalism of some club management. Both van Schaik and Aalbers agree that Sunderland did not stick to their agreements. “We had planned the whole thing differently,” says van Schaik, “but now the situation is as it is.”

For Wolfsburg, however, things are looking more positive. By signing Seelt, they not only responded to Vavro's injury, but also secured a promising defensive option. How the whole story will develop remains exciting. The only thing that is certain is that Deadline Day 2025 will go down in the annals!
