A7 closure in Hamburg: Elbe tunnel closed for three weekends!
The A7, the longest motorway in Germany, will be closed in the Hamburg area in autumn 2025 for extensive construction work. The Elbe Tunnel between Hamburg-Stellingen and Hamburg-Heimfeld will be subject to full closures for a total of three weekends, which could pose a challenge for many commuters and travelers. The closure will take place from Friday evening at 10 p.m. to Monday morning at 5 a.m. and will affect both the north and south lanes. Drivers should be particularly careful on the following dates:
- 17. bis 20. Oktober: 55 Stunden
- 7. bis 10. November: 55 Stunden
- 5. bis 8. Dezember: 55 Stunden
Reasons for blocking
The measures are necessary to optimize traffic routing through various works. This includes the raising of new traffic sign gantries, a software update of the tunnel system and the expansion of noise protection. Furthermore, the motorway will be expanded to eight lanes and the connection to the A26 will be revised. These measures are urgently needed to cope with the high traffic load on the A7, which counts up to 130,000 vehicles every day. Against a similar background, the eastern tube of the Elbe Tunnel was closed at the beginning of October, causing a traffic jam of around eight kilometers when fallen ceiling plaster had to be removed.
Detour and traffic jam forecasts
The diversions are wide-ranging and should be considered by all travelers in good time.
The following route recommendations are available for the north direction:
- A1 bei Horster Dreieck
- A21 bei Kreuz Bargteheide
- Rückkehr auf die A7 nördlich von Bad Segeberg über die B205
In the opposite direction, the diversions apply in reverse. Traffic jams are also to be expected on the diversion routes, which is why travelers to Hamburg Airport should allow more time and, if necessary, consider using public transport.
Important information for drivers
The upcoming work on the A7 is crucial for the transport infrastructure in northern Germany and should ensure long-term improvement and relief. The construction work is planned until 2028 in order, among other things, to optimize noise protection in Altona and improve the traffic situation. The A7 will therefore remain an important traffic axis in Germany in the future.
