Attention, Kiel-Wik! 700 residents have to evacuate due to bomb defusal!

Something is happening in the Kiel-Wik district today - and not in a positive sense. An American aerial bomb was discovered during construction work and now has to be defused. NDR reports that it was a 250 kg bomb that was lying in a pit at a depth of around two to two and a half meters. The bomb is a so-called “smasher” and has a damaged body and an impact detonator.

For the safety of residents, this means that almost 700 people have to leave their homes. The evacuation of the 179 affected addresses must be completed by 10 a.m. at the latest. The police have already started setting up road closures in the area to allow unhindered access for the explosive ordnance disposal service. Despite the unpleasant circumstances, the Kiel-Holtenau passenger ferry remains in operation while shipping through the lock is suspended.

Clearance measures and support

Emergency accommodation will be provided for the evacuated residents at Kastanienallee 18 in Kiel-Holtenau from 8 a.m. If you need help leaving your apartment, you can call(0431) 590 55 55contact the professional fire department. In such a stressful situation, it is important that all residents stock up on enough food, drinks and medication, as defusing the situation could take several hours.

In order to provide the population with the best possible information, multilingual leaflets are distributed. Residents can also find out more via special warning apps and the city's homepage. The press portal highlights that the police also provide up-to-date information via social media such as Facebook and Twitter. These measures are intended to ensure that people without knowledge of German in particular receive the necessary information.

The use of the explosive ordnance disposal service

The defusing itself is scheduled for Tuesday morning. Residents have to prepare for a longer period of time away from home. Information about how long the eviction measures will last is currently unclear. In any case, the city of Kiel will do everything to make this challenging day as smooth as possible.

The Kiel Police Department team is available to answer any questions and, after defusing, will also provide original sounds from the explosive ordnance disposal service to provide an insight into the measures carried out.

Particularly in such extraordinary situations, good cooperation is required: We therefore ask all citizens to pay attention to their neighbors and to inform each other.
