Kiel Mettenhof: Free WiFi for more digital participation in the district!
In Mettenhof we are working hard on digital networking. Councilman Raman Muhammad from the SPD has set itself the goal of introducing public WiFi in the district. Instead of just equipping large supermarkets with Internet access, the WiFi points should also be made available in residential areas and heavily frequented places.
The approach to improving digital participation locally has a prominent model: the “Smart Gaarden” initiative, which ran from 2021 to 2023. This initiative aimed to promote networking and digital understanding in the Gaarden district and thus offers an exciting approach to the plans in Mettenhof.
WiFi for everyone – new contact points
The proposals for Mettenhof include WiFi access in central locations such as the leisure area at Heidenberger Teich, in youth facilities and shopping centers. An interesting feature could be a local information platform such as mettenhof.de, which provides WLAN users with additional information, explains Muhamad. The idea came from one Citizens' Café received very positively in the community center. Those present reported on their experiences with the limited data volume of their mobile contracts and the need for public WiFi.
The need is particularly clear at the Heidenberger Teich, where Rosie cousin WLAN for plant identification wishes. Young people in the district also have great expectations of the new WiFi; many want the availability at bus stops, sports fields and the skate park, as if you were doing a good business outdoors. Malik Azuz, an employee at Start Café, describes the reality that many residents rely on public Wi-Fi to be able to go online with their devices.
Promote community and close the digital divide
The local council chairwoman Kirsten Voss sees the planned WiFi project as a valuable contribution to strengthening the sense of community in the district. In order to take the step into the digital future, support from local IT service providers may also be necessary. These not only offer Internet connections and network support, but can also help with optimizing the technical infrastructure a.plasit.
This initiative for Mettenhof could show that digital participation is possible anywhere in the country, be it in urban centers or in less frequented regions, if the right steps are taken. With the right support, Mettenhof will succeed in becoming a future model for other parts of the city.
