In the far north it's time again to choose the sporting talents! The election for the athletes of the year in Schleswig-Holstein brings with it exciting nominations. How kn-online.de reports, handball and water sports are the dominant disciplines among the nominees. Of a total of 15 athletes, nine come from these sports, complemented by an outstanding triathlete.
A recurring name is the basketball player Elisa Mevius, who was already honored with an award in 2024 and is now selected again. Mevius is currently excelling in the USA with the Oregon Ducks and can look back on success at the World University Games, where she won 3×3 gold. Other nominees in the Female Athlete of the Year category are Tanja Scholz (para-swimming), Greta Amort (rowing), Julia Bröcker (triathlon) and Rose Oatley (dressage).
The team of the year could see THW Kiel, who recently won the dhb Cup, and SG Flensburg-Handewitt is also among the favorites after winning the European League. The Blau-Weiß Wittorf badminton club and some sailing and synchronized swimming teams are also nominated. It is particularly worth mentioning that Holstein Kiel, last year's winner, is not nominated this year.
Lone fighters in the spotlight
In the individual athlete category, Rasmus Ankermann from THW Kiel is honored for his achievements, especially for winning the world championship title with the German U19 national team. Like big names like Magnus Wislander and Nikola Karabatic, he could win in two categories. Competitors include Ole Schweckendiek (sailing), Miklas Scheer (rowing), Lennart Sass (para-judo) and Freddy Kriwitt (boxing).
To take part, sports fans can cast their votes until December 10th at www.ndr.de/sh. The award will take place on December 16th at a gala in the Holstenhallen in Neumünster.
As far as THW Kiel's current season is concerned, the Zebras were not characterized by lack of success despite missing out on places in the Champions League in the DAIKIN Handball Bundesliga. The club not only secured its 13th title in the DHB Cup, but also celebrated a bronze place at the EHF European League finals in Hamburg. The semi-final against the Rhein-Neckar Löwen, which was decided after extra time, provided additional drama. In the impressive final in front of 20,000 spectators, MT Melsungen was defeated. The victory was particularly emotional for captain Patrick Wiencek, who ended his career on a high, while Domagoj Duvnjak gave him the honor of presenting the trophy himself. These successes are confirmation of the impressive work the club is doing.
Growth in handball sports
