Curious break-in: Stihl garden tools and coffee stolen from Lübeck cemetery!

In Lübeck, a strange break-in at the Vorwerk cemetery is currently causing a stir. On the night of Thursday, June 12, 2025, two men aged 48 and 49 forced their way into several buildings in the cemetery. The pair's loot didn't exactly come from the classic burglary repertoire. Rather, the perpetrators stole high-quality Stihl garden tools, including leaf blowers, chainsaws and brush cutters, as well as a microwave and several packs of coffee. The value of the stolen goods is similar to the material damage, which amounts to around 10,000 euros, as shz.de reports.

The break-in was discovered on Thursday morning by a cleaning worker who noticed signs of break-in on the sheds and storage rooms. The perpetrators were initially able to escape, but fate soon turned out to be unfavorable for them. On the same day, they were caught during a check by the Maschen motorway police while driving through an intersection in Marmstorf when the red light was running. In the trunk of their silver Audi A3, the officers found the stolen Stihl garden tools, which also had stickers from the Vorwerk cemetery on them. Possible burglary tools were also discovered in her vehicle.

Arrest and release

As part of the investigation, the two Romanians were temporarily arrested and taken to the police station. However, after the police measures were completed and in consultation with the Lübeck public prosecutor's office, they were released again because there were no grounds for detention. Commissariat 12 of the Lübeck District Criminal Investigation Department is now conducting further investigations into serious theft. This connection to a well-known topic is not new, as theft has repeatedly been an explosive topic in Germany in recent years.

Insights into crime statistics

As Statista data shows, around 5.63 million crimes were recorded in Germany in 2022, including numerous thefts, which increased compared to previous years. What is particularly noticeable is the increased number of cases in the area of theft, which climbed to a total of 1.78 million cases in 2022. Residential burglaries have increased and continue to pose a challenge for security authorities. For example, in North Rhine-Westphalia, over 23,500 residential burglaries were recorded, which accounts for more than 35% of all cases in the federal states. The criminal statistics overview also shows that the clearance rate for residential burglaries is very low at only 16.1%.

In the case of the break-in at the Vorwerk cemetery, it remains to be seen what further developments the investigations by Commissariat 12 will bring. However, one thing is certain: crime in such a quiet place as a cemetery not only leaves property damaged, but also causes headaches and discussions in the community.
