VfB Lübeck informs: Spin-off of the men's team is imminent!
VfB Lübeck is facing a decisive turning point in its club history. As part of the ordinary general meeting on October 18, 2025, a possible spin-off of the first men's team's game operations into a capital company was initiated. The goal of this initiative is clear: to secure the association's economic basis and at the same time maintain its non-profit status. The association reports this on its official website, which also invites you to take part in upcoming information events.
The first steps in this direction have already been taken. On Wednesday, December 10, 2025, VfB Lübeck invites you to an information event in the Lohmühle stadium at 6:00 p.m. The members should be informed about the various outsourcing options and their opinions should be actively incorporated into the decision-making process. Participation is crucial because an extraordinary general meeting will take place by July 1, 2026 to vote on the topic, explains VfB Lübeck.
Members in focus
Things get particularly exciting when you consider that various cooperative models are being discussed. These are becoming increasingly popular in the football world, as the example of FC St. Pauli shows. “A sale to investors is out of the question,” emphasizes VfB uncomfortably, “we want to stay green and white.” However, the question remains about the financial flexibility and professionalism that a spin-off could offer.
Emotions and economic considerations
Football is emotionally charged, and those in charge of the club know that. Fans' concerns about their influence in a spinoff are real. Many large clubs have already outsourced their football departments, which has certainly led to greater economic flexibility. In fact, of the 36 first and second division clubs in Germany, only 12 are organized as registered clubs, while numerous others operate in the form of GmbH & Co. KGaA or stock corporations, as [KPMG] explains.
There is also the 50+1 rule, which is intended to secure the influence of the members. Still, this rule is controversial and some clubs want to repeal it. It is all the more important that VfB Lübeck communicates closely with its fans in order to avoid later misunderstandings. This is particularly true since a spin-off requires the approval of the general meeting with a three-quarters majority.
In what may be an exciting time ahead for the association, it will be exciting to see how many members will show up for the information event on December 10th. Responses are required by December 9th at the latest. Those interested can contact via email membership@vfb-luebeck.de or call 0451 484720.
VfB Lübeck not only wants to play a good role in the upper leagues, but also wants to create a strong, common foundation within its member base. The next steps will be crucial for the future direction of the club. It remains to be seen which direction the journey will take.
