Young Union meets reservists: opportunities for careers and home service

On October 18, 2025, members of the Junge Union (JU) from the Pinneberg district and representatives of the Holstein-South district group of the Association of Reservists of the German Bundeswehr e.V. (VdRBw) met in the Jürgen Schumann barracks in Appen for an informative exchange. The main goal of the event was to shed light on career opportunities within the Bundeswehr and to show the path to becoming an undeserved reservist [reservistenverband.de]. The participants were able to find out about military and civilian careers in the Bundeswehr.

In the aircraft hangar of the RK Flugdienst, numerous topics relating to training to become an unemployed reservist were discussed. These included careers in technology, crafts, IT and administration as well as study opportunities at Bundeswehr universities. There were also discussions on legal and organizational issues that are important to many interested parties. Furthermore, the opportunity was offered to try out shooting at the nearby KK range under the supervision of experienced shooting instructors. After the event, the evening ended with a barbecue where the discussions continued.

Facing challenges

The Bundeswehr, which is currently urgently looking for young talent, is faced with a dilemma. Many interested parties, like the 30-year-old project manager Hannes B. from Aachen, who applied as an unemployed person in July 2024, find that it takes months before they receive feedback on their application status. Despite initial positive feedback from the state command, which promised that training would not start until 2026 at the earliest, uncertainty regarding the training of unserving personnel remains high, as zdfheute.de reports.

Training for unserviced reservists has been temporarily paused, and there are only 500 planned training places for 2025. Defense Minister Boris Pistorius warns that the Bundeswehr is not ready for war and is planning to reform the military service model. In line with this, the reservist association is calling for an increase in training places to 5,000 in order to meet demand.

The importance of training

The training of reservists plays a central role in the Bundeswehr. In the training train, the focus is on teaching basic military skills and general soldierly behavior. It is aimed at reservists from all areas and aims to promote physical and military performance. It is particularly important that all comrades are included in the process in order to strengthen the community, as emphasized at bundeswehr-reservisten.de.

Although the challenges are great, the meeting in Appen shows that there is room for cooperation and exchange between the Junge Union and the reservist association. The commitment to national and alliance defense as well as disaster relief are highlighted by both sides as important aspects that currently need to be promoted.
