Daughters against Merz: Kiel demonstrates for diversity and democracy!

Something is brewing in Kiel: On Sunday, an impressive demonstration took place against Chancellor Friedrich Merz's controversial statements on migration policy. The event, called “Daughters against Merz,” began at 2 p.m. at Kiel Central Station. With an estimated 1,700 participants, significantly more than the 1,000 registered, the protesters marched through the city.

The messages on the banners were unmistakable: “Kiel is colorful” and “What scares me is your politics, Mr. Merz,” leaving no doubt that the protest was a clear signal against racism and for diversity. The demonstrators, supported by various women's networks, appealed for solidarity in society. They made it clear that migration was not the problem, but rather racism, which often began within one's own four walls - not just in the cityscape.

Controversies surrounding Merz

Friedrich Merz's statements caused tumultuous discussions - not only in Kiel, but also nationwide. The Chancellor said last week that the federal government had to correct shortcomings in migration policy, but that there were still problems in the cityscape. This was sharply criticized from many quarters, including from the SPD and the Greens in Schleswig-Holstein. Merz himself stuck to his statement that there should be repatriations and was unimpressed by the growing protests.

In several other cities in Germany, people also took to the streets to demonstrate against his statements. In Hamburg, around 2,000 people gathered in mixed weather, chanting slogans like “Merz out of our cityscape!” chanted. Protests also took place in Magdeburg and Hildesheim, and the central demand was clear everywhere: to stand together against racism and social division.

Social challenges in Schleswig-Holstein

The discussions surrounding Merz’s statements also focus on broader social problems. The number of victims of domestic violence rose last year, while attacks on police officers increased. Women often feel more unsafe in the city, especially at night, highlighting the need for additional support. A project team from the University of Kiel is working hard to find solutions to help people in need, while the country's municipalities are under considerable pressure from the welfare state.

In addition, the influence of invasive species such as raccoons and raccoon dogs is becoming increasingly noticeable in Schleswig-Holstein, which particularly endangers native species and the stability of the dikes. Thunderstorms and storm surges on the North Sea as well as in the Weser and Elbe areas are also increasing again, presenting the region with new challenges.

In the midst of these complex issues, people are standing on the streets and sending a clear signal: It is time for a real dialogue about racism, diversity and cohesion in our society. Because no one wants to live in a time characterized by fear and division. The demonstrations are not only a reflection of discontent, but also a call for solidarity and better coexistence.
