Bremen's labor market at a ten-year high: What does that mean for the future?
The labor market in Bremen and Bremerhaven is currently not very dynamic. Again Weser report reported that unemployment figures are at a ten-year high of 45,398 people. In June there was a minimal decrease of 0.1 percent compared to May, but this can only slightly reduce the increase of 2,542 people compared to the same month last year.
There are currently 34,287 people registered as unemployed in Bremen. Here too there was a small decline of 37 people or -0.1 percent in June. Compared to June 2024, 2,490 more people are unemployed, which corresponds to an increase of 7.8 percent. The unemployment rate is currently 10.9 percent, slightly below the 11.0 percent in the previous month, but above the 10.2 percent in the previous year.
Job offers and industry development
The number of job vacancies fell to 7,428 - a decrease of 19 jobs or -0.3 percent compared to the previous month. What is particularly noticeable is the significantly lower number of jobs compared to the same month last year, which amounted to 1,324 jobs or -15.1 percent. It is possible that the requirements for applicants will become more stringent, as demand has increased particularly in the areas of manufacturing, temporary employment and scientific and technical services as well as in health and social services. A slight increase in demand from the construction industry was also noted.
The development on the labor market was described by Joachim Ossmann, chairman of the Bremen-Bremerhaven employment agency, as the result of a difficult economic situation. The numbers confirm this assessment and paint a picture of a market that is struggling to respond to the challenges.
Annual overview and further developments
Youth unemployment also remains an issue, with 3,569 youth aged 15 to 24 unemployed - an increase of 1.5 percent. Particular attention must be paid to the high unemployment rate in Bremerhaven of 14.1 percent, an increase of 0.8 percentage points compared to the previous year.
The additional figures also show increasing unemployment among women and foreigners. The latter recorded an increase of 10.2 percent. Workers with disabilities are also affected; 1,630 people are unemployed, which corresponds to an increase of 2.8 percent.
A challenging picture is emerging for the future. Due to international uncertainties, such as the Ukraine and Gaza wars, and the high number of retirements, the shortage of skilled workers could increase. A clear focus will have to be placed on qualification and the promotion of professional qualifications.
