Bremerhaven opens violence protection clinic: Help for those affected is now here!
On September 4, 2025, a significant innovation in the area of violence protection was ceremoniously inaugurated in Bremerhaven: the violence protection clinic. This facility at the Bremerhaven-Reinkenheide Clinic represents an important step in helping those affected by domestic, sexual or gender-specific violence. You can have injuries documented there free of charge and confidentially, which is of great importance for possible criminal charges or civil legal action. The official opening was attended by several prominent personalities includingClaudia Bernard, Senator for Health, Women and Consumer Protection, as wellDr. Susanne Kleinbrahm, the medical director of the KBR.
The offer of the violence protection clinic is part of the Bremen state action plan for the implementation of theIstanbul Convention, which Germany ratified in 2017. This convention aims to prevent and combat violence against women and domestic violence and to help those affected. In order to further ensure the effectiveness of this facility, funding of 1.1 million euros will be available in 2025 to expand the offering in Bremen.
Sensitive support for those affected
The injuries can be documented both with and without a police report and is done with the consent of those affected. The trained team at the violence protection clinic is subject to confidentiality, which is of utmost importance in such sensitive cases. For more detailed examinations, there is a protected room in which documentation is carried out, while medical care is provided if necessary in emergency rooms or doctor's offices.
The consultation hours for making appointments are Monday to Friday between 9 a.m. and 2 p.m. by telephone0471 299-3309or by emailviolentprotectionambulanz@klinikum-bremerhaven.dereachable. Examinations take place on Wednesdays from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. and Fridays from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. Those affected by sexual violence also have the opportunity to report to the central emergency room without an appointment.
A strong network
The violence protection clinic in Bremerhaven works closely with the Clinic for Child and Adolescent Medicine and the Clinic for Gynecology at the KBR. There is also a cooperation with the violence protection clinic at the Bremen-Mitte Clinic, which provides additional services such as reports and case management. This shows how important it is for different institutions to work closely together to create a comprehensive support network for those affected.
Further information is available on the clinic's homepage, and for acute injuries it is recommended that you first contact a medical practice, emergency room or emergency room, as the violence protection clinic does not carry out medical diagnostics or wound care.
With the opening of the violence protection clinic in Bremerhaven, an important step has been taken to combat violence against women and to support those affected. This initiative shows that serious work is being done to improve the situation - something is happening!
