Madness on the Weser: Bremen fights back against Leverkusen!
What a spectacle on the Weser today! On the second matchday of the Bundesliga, Werder Bremen dealt Bayer Leverkusen a severe setback. The encounter ended 3-3, and it had everything a football heart could desire: drama, twists and turns and some very special individual performances.
Leverkusen got out of the starting blocks brilliantly and scored their first goal in the 5th minute through Patrik Schick. The striker benefited from a bad pass from Bremen's Karim Coulibaly, who initially had an unfortunate performance. The Werkself didn't let up and just a little later, in the 35th minute, Malik Tillman made it 2-0. What a start for the guests!
A turning point in the game
But Bremen didn't give up. After the first goal by Romano Schmid in the 44th minute, who confidently converted a penalty, there was hope in the Weserstadion. Schmid had the opportunity after a foul from Axel Tape. The Bremen fans felt that even more was possible here.
The second half started dicey for the hosts after Niklas Stark had to leave the field with a red card in the 63rd minute. Leverkusen took advantage of the majority and increased the lead to 3-1, again with a penalty caused by Stark. But instead of safely bringing home the victory, the unthinkable happened: Werder managed a comeback in the final minutes!
Thrilling injury time
In the 76th minute, Isaac Schmidt made it 2-3 and in stoppage time, more precisely in the 90+4. In the minute, Karim Coulibaly scored the equalizer. This made him the youngest goalscorer in the club's history in the Bremen Bundesliga. A moment that will go down in the history books!
Leverkusen goalkeeper Mark Flekken also had to put up with some criticism today. Several mistakes led directly to Bremen's goals, and especially towards the end of the game he seemed to lack confidence. Leverkusen's captain, Robert Andrich, was visibly frustrated by the loss of the lead and the missed opportunity to get the game over time.
The next challenge for the two teams is already around the corner: Werder Bremen will face Borussia Mönchengladbach on September 14th, while Bayer Leverkusen will face Eintracht Frankfurt on September 12th.
A game with many facets that the fans will certainly not forget in a hurry. Football is fun! Who knows what else awaits us in the coming weeks?
