Massive closures in Greifswald: the city center becomes an event restricted area!

Preparations for MV Day in Greifswald are in full swing and the effects are already clearly noticeable. From June 20th, the city center will be transformed into a restricted area, which will involve massive traffic closures. This not only affects through traffic, but also residents, who are only allowed to leave their homes in a few exceptional cases. The closures are necessary to enable the numerous events surrounding MV Day, which takes place from June 20th to 22nd, as Presseportal reports.

The city recommends that all passengers and visitors avoid the city center and use the bypass roads (B109/B105). The construction of the barriers begins on Friday, June 20th, from 4 p.m. The pedestrian zone will be closed from Kaplaufenstrasse to the Europa junction. Other restricted areas include:

  • Hansering zwischen Stralsunder Straße und Holzgasse
  • Bereich vor dem Fangenturm in der Hafenstraße
  • Salinenstraße ab Samstag, ca. 10:00 Uhr
  • Friedrich-Loeffler-Straße zwischen Johann-Sebastian-Bach-Straße und Hansering
  • Rakower Straße, Fleischerstraße und Baderstraße nördlich der Domstraße

Public transport and parking options

There are also far-reaching changes to local public transport. Bus lines 2 and 3 will not operate on Friedrich-Loeffler-Straße between June 20th, 4:00 p.m. and June 22nd, closing time. Stops such as Tierpark, Campus Loefflerstraße, Rathaus and Knopfstraße will be canceled during this time. Cyclists and pedestrians are therefore particularly well advised to find out about alternative routes in good time.

The “Town Hall” stop will remain unoperated from June 17th to June 23rd. The frequency of line 2 will nevertheless be extended on Friday and Saturday, with additional trips in the direction of Wiecker Brücke and Schönwalde. For drivers who do need to enter the city center, parking spaces are available such as those at the museum harbor, where residents' parking permits are free all day. However, the parking lot at Hansering costs 3 euros per day.

Environmentally friendly travel recommended

The city of Greifswald asks everyone to use environmentally friendly means of transport and switch to cycling or public transport. In addition, during the MV day there will be an exhibition “Women who move Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania”, which is organized by the Heinrich Böll Foundation M-V, as Greifswald-Netz mentioned. This is another reason to visit the city, even if the journey may be a little more difficult.

The city administration has already informed citizens in advance and emphasizes the importance of environmentally friendly travel and the necessity of the closures. With good planning, everyone can still be a part of the hustle and bustle around MV Day - an event that attracts a lot of visitor traffic and makes Greifswald come alive.
