Horse gala Cavalluna” inspires Schwerin despite PETA criticism!
Yesterday, on October 24, 2025, the Schwerin sports and congress hall was once again transformed into a fairytale setting for horse lovers and curious people. The horse gala “Cavalluna” captivated around 3,000 spectators, including little Erika from Ludwigslust, who came to the show with her grandparents. This special birthday surprise was a real highlight for the five-year-old horse lover, as she is passionate about the majestic animals.
The title of this year's gala, "Gateway to the Otherworld", tells the captivating story of the young sorceress Meerin, who is rejected by her people. Their fight against the sorcerer Röndrup and his niece runs through the entire show, which brings together more than 50 horses and riders from nine different countries. The mix of equestrian skills, music, dance as well as light and special effects and the colorful costumes ensure an unforgettable experience.
A look behind the scenes
However, there were also critical voices in the run-up to the gala: the animal rights organization PETA expressed concerns about the treatment of the animals. “Cavalluna” took a stand and emphasized that the welfare of the animals is the top priority. Cavalluna explains that the horses are only trained in an environment designed for their well-being. This means, among other things, that the horses are housed in mobile, heated stables and always receive veterinary care.
The horses not only enjoy plenty of exercise in paddocks and meadows, but are also usually kept in the company of familiar peers. This ensures comfort and reduces stress, which is very important for their overall well-being. To meet the animals' needs, they are prepared for the shows in a calm atmosphere, so that police and riders can ensure that the horses perform the performances happily and without coercion.
Legal framework and responsibility
Animal protection in Germany is regulated by the Animal Protection Act, which prohibits causing pain or suffering to animals without a reasonable reason. Responsible horse owners are also obliged to feed and house their animals in a species-appropriate manner. The benchmark for keeping horses is the “Guidelines for assessing horse keeping from an animal welfare point of view”, which, however, is not legally binding. Years of training are essential for the trained animals of “Cavalluna” in order to enable them to appear harmoniously at the gala.
If abuses in animal husbandry are discovered, the veterinary office is responsible for legal punishment. Anyone who is aware of such conditions is also asked to report them - underlines the importance of active animal protection work. It is therefore not only important to consider animal welfare as a top priority, but also to actively work to eliminate grievances.
The horse gala “Cavalluna” will be performed two more times in Schwerin this weekend: on Saturday at 7 p.m. and on Sunday at 1 p.m. Let yourself be carried away by the magic of this event!
