Art in focus: New exhibition honors Karlheinz Wenzel in Neubrandenburg!

The Neubrandenburg Art Collection invites you to the first vernissage of the new exhibition series “Im Here Im Now” on December 10, 2025. This initiative aims to focus on artists from Neubrandenburg and the surrounding region and offers them a platform to present their works.

The series begins with a tribute to Karlheinz Wenzel, who died on October 8, 2025. The opening, which will take place at 5 p.m., will be hosted by Dr. Elke Pretzel, the curator of the art collection, and Dr. by Ulrike Pennewitz, the head of the collection. The musical accompaniment will be provided by Anatoliy Mosyuk on the bassoon and Marcos Atala Quezada on the violin, who will give the event a celebratory touch.

Karlheinz Wenzel – An artist with history

Karlheinz Wenzel, born in 1932 in Vlkov pod O¹kobrhem (Wolfsberg), was a formative figure in the art scene of the Mecklenburg Lake District. After training as a commercial advertiser in Wittenberg in 1947 and studying at the University of Fine and Applied Arts in Berlin-Weißensee from 1950 to 1955, he settled in Neubrandenburg in 1970. There he supervised painting and drawing circles for many years and was a mentor for a large number of young artists.

Wenzel was known for his colorful works that included landscapes, cityscapes and portraits. Among his publicly visible works, the wall relief “Musical Education of Children” and the mural “The Four Times of Day” stand out. The works shown in the exhibition come from both the art collection and his estate and provide a deep insight into his work.

Neubrandenburg Art Collection – A treasure of the region

The Neubrandenburg Art Collection, founded in 1982, documents the region's art development and now includes more than 8,000 works by regional and national artists. This collection not only offers a look back at the art history of the area, but also opens the door to current contemporary positions. With the new series, the art collection primarily wants to promote dialogue between artists and the public.

With this initiative, the city and its actors show that the local art scene is lively and diverse. Anyone who is interested in the artistic movements in Neubrandenburg should not miss this exhibition. It is a great opportunity to discover the works of one of the region's most important artists and become part of the creative exchange yourself.
