Disney Adventure: Germany's largest cruise ship reaches Mukran!
After an almost two-day journey, the “Disney Adventure” has finally reached the port of Mukran on Rügen. The cruise ship, which was built in Wismar, is 342 meters long and 46 meters wide and is the largest ever built in this northern German city. The arrival of the ship in the industrial port delighted many onlookers who attended the spectacular departure maneuver in Wismar on Monday evening. During the journey, the harbor waters were closed to other ships to ensure smooth transport.
Important work is underway in Mukran, as the ship will store fuel and take on water here. This is crucial because the shallow channel depth of 9.50 meters in Wismar previously did not allow this. On the ship itself, numerous workers continue to load necessary materials and make final adjustments before the time rolls around for the first voyage in Southeast Asia.
The long journey to completion
Construction of the “Disney Adventure” began in March 2018 and was originally planned as “Global One”, later changed to “Global Dream”. The completion of the ship was marked by many uncertainties, particularly the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic, which severely affected the entire cruise industry in 2020. While the industry recorded a record high of 29.7 million passengers in 2019, the number of passengers fell by around 80% in 2020, leading to massive losses for major shipping companies.
In this context, Genting Hong Kong and MV Shipyards filed for bankruptcy in 2022, endangering the future of the ship. The Disney company took over the construction and had the ship redesigned according to their own ideas. From December 15, 2025, the “Disney Adventure” will be used for multi-day trips from Singapore, symbolizing the return to the waters of the cruise industry.
Cruise industry recovery
Back to the current situation: the cruise industry is showing signs of significant recovery. After the pandemic, the number of passengers increased to 20.4 million in 2022, almost 70% of the 2019 level. An increase to around 30 million passengers is expected in 2023, and by 2025 it could even reach 31.5 million. A key factor is flexible cancellation policies and a wide selection of modern ships with environmentally friendly technology that meets the demand for stylish cruises.
With the growing market in Asia, particularly in countries such as China and Japan, as well as increasing interest in longer trips and themed cruises, the popularity of cruises will continue to remain high. The “Disney Adventure” could fit exactly into this trend as the industry’s new flagship.
Looking to a positive future and hoping for safe, exciting trips in the coming years - the “Disney Adventure” could be the beginning of new adventures in the cruise industry.
