When people talk about golf in northern Germany, they can't help but mention Jens Gunkel. The 71-year-old golf professional is not only a face of the Schloss Krugsdorf golf club in Western Pomerania, but also a passionate trainer with inexhaustible enthusiasm for his profession. Northern Courier reports that he came to Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania from the Mediterranean region and has since worked for several clubs here. His career is as extraordinary as it is inspiring.
Gunkel's first experiences with golf make him unique in the scene. He had no contact with the game until his adult life, until he came across a golf course in Malaysia. “Back then it was an introductory course, and now I stand on the pitch every day and give coaching lessons,” he says. And remarkably, he has been doing this for over 20 years, having graduated as a Teaching Pro in 1994.
The everyday life of a golf training
What is it about Gunkel that fascinates him so much about his job? “The sun, the fresh air and the contact with people,” he explains with a broad smile. He gives four to six hours of training every day and is convinced that exercise, fresh air and his sniffer dog, Hermine, give him the energy he needs to stay active and fit in this phase of his life. “I plan to teach for another 20 to 30 years,” he says confidently.
His “office”? A well-kept golf course, which is a special plus for him. In the handicap courses, he appreciates the exchange on various topics with his students. “You never stop learning,” says Gunkel. In addition to golf, he has another hobby: he grows vegetables and experiments with “organic culture,” which helps him clear his head and develop new ideas.

At the moment, Tommy Fleetwood is leading the tournament and the excitement is palpable. Gunkel, who also follows the big tournaments with interest, recognizes that the passion for the sport extends beyond all age limits. While the sport of golf remains fascinating for many viewers, Gunkel shows that coaching and commitment to the sport at the age of 71 are also a healthy mix of work and passion.
