Pension revolution in October: How to get your payments sooner!
In October 2025 there will be some changes for pensioners in Germany that are likely to cause quite a stir. For millions of pensioners, the monthly payment will be made earlier this time. As Ruhr24 reports, the exact payment date depends heavily on the pensioner's place of residence. Because Reformation Day, which falls on a Friday on October 31st, creates an exception to the regular payout.
In the federal states where Reformation Day is legally recognized - such as Hamburg, Lower Saxony and Saxony - the pension is paid out on October 30th. In the remaining federal states where this holiday does not apply, pensioners have to wait until October 31st. Such different payout dates are rather the exception, as there is usually a uniform regulation for payouts on the last banking day of the month.
New pension package is launching
In addition to the changed payout dates, there will also be some fundamental changes to the pension system in October 2025. The EU payment directive PSD3 comes into force, which, according to the German Pension Insurance, will have no impact on statutory pension payments. The Pension Package 2025, which was approved by the Federal Cabinet, deals, among other things, with the stabilization of the pension level and the introduction of the mother's pension III. This means that pension policy in Germany is once again becoming more important. Federal Minister of Labor Bärbel Bas emphasizes: “The pension remains stable and fair.”
The pension level is to be stabilized at 48 percent by 2031. There is also a significant adjustment in terms of child-rearing times. With Mother's Pension III, up to three years of parenting time is now credited for all children born before 1992, which represents a significant improvement for many mothers.
Cash payment and proof of life
Another important point for pensioners is the cash payment. From October 2025, this will only be possible in the months of October, November and December before it will be completely discontinued in 2026. Pensioners should therefore switch to a bank account to receive their payments. In addition, most pensioners no longer have to submit proof of life every year, as their pension entitlement will be checked automatically in the future, as WMN.de notes.
With these numerous changes, pension reform is an important issue that affects many generations and will be a topic of discussion among those affected. Millions of pensioners will now have to wait anxiously for the upcoming payment dates and adapt to the changes to the pension system. It remains to be hoped that these reforms will provide good support for pensioners and enable them to live a comfortable life in old age.
