State Harvest Festival 2025: Colorful program on Poel and in Wismar!

The 34th State Harvest Festival in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania has opened its doors on the picturesque island of Poel, and that is causing a lot of joy among locals and visitors. Under the motto “Unity of city and country”, the festival takes place not only on the island, but also in Wismar, and promises a colorful program with numerous attractions. Culinary delicacies, exciting competitions and a large stage program are just some of the highlights that await guests. Stern.de reports that the event location on Poel is the estate, the barn and the “cowshed” in Niendorf.

The preparations for this big event took a whole year. Mayor Gabriele Richter from the island of Poel, Mayor Thomas Beyer from Wismar and District Administrator Tino Schomann from Northwest Mecklenburg presented the program together. And the list of attractions is truly impressive. From the Farmers' Olympics to chicken bingo to a potato peeling competition, everything is there. The Farmers' Ball is traditionally celebrated on Saturday evening. In keeping with this, District Administrator Schomann emphasizes the diversity of the region and invites everyone to celebrate together. ndr.de reports.

Pageant and harvest crown

A highlight of the festival will be the big parade on Sunday, which will move through the city center of Wismar. The parade, which starts at 11:15 a.m., follows the Thanksgiving service in the Nicolaikirche at 10 a.m. The move is led by Prime Minister Manuela Schwesig (SPD) and Agriculture Minister Till Backhaus (SPD). An integral part of the tradition is the handover of the hand-made harvest crown, which Schwesig receives on the market square at 1 p.m. This harvest crown is made by country women in the weeks before the festival.

But the festival also comes with challenges: the weather forecast is causing great concern for the organizers. Rain and storms could lead to short-term changes to the program. Nevertheless, the atmosphere during the festive season will remain lighthearted, as every day begins with a solemn Thanksgiving service that gets visitors in the mood for the celebrations.

Venues and directions

The festival is celebrated on Saturday on the island of Poel and on Sunday in Wismar. On both days there are shuttle buses that commute between Wismar, Niendorf and Timmendorf Strand. Getting to Poel Island is easy, with a car park right next to the venue. It is recommended that visitors to Wismar use public transport, as parking around the market square will be closed from Friday. On Sunday, during the parade, traffic restrictions are also expected between 11 a.m. and 12.30 p.m.

The state harvest festival is a long-standing tradition that has been celebrated in the fall for centuries. The focus is on communal joy and cohesion between city and country. Whether in Niendorf or Wismar – the festival will be an unforgettable experience for everyone involved. True to the motto: celebrate together, enjoy the diversity and appreciate the yield of the harvest.
