New head of the Metelsdorf traffic police station introduced!

July 17, 2025 was an important day for the Metelsdorf highway and traffic police station. Thomas Hühn was officially introduced as the new head of the district in a ceremonial setting. Among those present were Police Chief Anja Hamann and Police Chief Hannes Lerke, both of whom sent a strong signal for the restart. Alongside numerous colleagues and department heads, they celebrated this change at the head of the district, which is responsible for 216 kilometers of highway and traffic safety work in the northwest Mecklenburg district. Thomas Hühn is no stranger to police work. He brings with him many years of experience that he has gained since his career with the Schleswig-Holstein State Police in 1991 before moving to Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania in 1992. In his career, Hühn has held various positions, including patrol officer and service dog handler in the Grevesmühlen police station as well as service group leader in Grevesmühlen and in the Wismar police headquarters. He most recently headed the Metelsdorf motorway and traffic police station since April 2024, succeeding Michael Harnack.

In his speech, Hühn emphasized the importance of teamwork, which he considers essential in police work. This reflects the police's desire to promote a sense of community and collegial cooperation, which is particularly important in today's world.

Background of police work in Germany

The police structure in Germany is complex and federalist. As the Federal Agency for Civic Education explains, there are not only the Federal Police and the Federal Criminal Police Office, but also 16 state police forces, each of which operates independently. Around 250,000 police officers are on duty in this country. The police's tasks range from repression, i.e. solving crimes, to prevention.

It is not just crime issues that are responsible for the increasing challenges in police work, but also digitalization, which brings with it new opportunities and requirements. According to the latest report, there were over 5.7 million registered crimes in Germany in 2017, with the clearance rate being around 57%. These metrics demonstrate the challenges police face every day.

The role of the highway and traffic police

Motorway and traffic police stations play an essential role, particularly in the area of traffic safety. Andre Steinhaus has been in charge of the motorway and traffic police station in Dummerstorf since January 1, 2021. With extensive experience in technical traffic monitoring and as a service group leader, he has focused on safety checks on trucks and buses. Such measures are crucial to increasing traffic safety on Germany's roads and preventing accidents.

Both districts, Metelsdorf and Dummerstorf, contribute to overall protection on the streets and highways and are part of a larger network that aims to ensure the safety of citizens. The challenges are diverse, but with experienced leaders such as Thomas Hühn and Andre Steinhaus, the departments are well positioned to meet them.
