Alarm in Lower Saxony: Bird flu is spreading rapidly!
Bird flu is back and is currently causing great concern in Lower Saxony. The H5N1 virus is spreading particularly in the Rotenburg district. NDR reports two new outbreaks in the Selsingen community, which were confirmed by the Friedrich Loeffler Institute. Around 44,000 animals have already had to be killed to prevent the pathogen from spreading further.
The situation is serious: exclusion zones of at least three kilometers and monitoring zones of at least ten kilometers have been set up around the affected companies. The Ministry of Agriculture has also given permission to shoot sick cranes in certain districts such as Stade, Verden and the Heidekreis in order to contain the spread of the virus.
Current situation in Lower Saxony
So far, a total of almost 840,000 animals have died or been killed in Lower Saxony due to bird flu. Since mid-October, over 30 outbreaks have been documented in poultry farms, with the focus being in the Cloppenburg district. Of particular concern is the high number of 2,257 poultry farms in this region, which together house around 12.3 million animals.
The state commissioner for animal protection has criticized the animal disease policy and factory farming. She warns that the spread of the virus is promoted by contaminated footwear, equipment and possibly also by aerosols. Even if the virus is considered harmless to humans, it still has the potential to act as a carrier. The appeal to the public is to adhere to safety measures and possibly prepare for restrictions in zoos.
