Heat chaos in Braunschweig: Raffteich outdoor pool full, blocking illegal parking!
Wednesday, July 2nd, was the hottest day of the year in Braunschweig with temperatures reaching 40 degrees Celsius. This extreme heat wave left many people scrambling for cooling. While some preferred the shady spots in their apartments, many citizens were drawn to the cool water of the Raffteich outdoor pool. There it became a real magnet for swimming addicts, although this also had its downsides. News38 reported a remarkable rush of visitors: around 3,600 people enjoyed cooling off that day.
However, the large number of visitors also led to massive traffic problems around the outdoor pool. Residents reported that “nothing works at Raffteichbad anymore,” and the situation escalated, especially on Madamenweg. Illegal parking blocked the roads, causing difficulties for residents and buses in the area. The police even had to intervene twice on Madamenweg, but found that there was no noticeable traffic obstruction. The city pool spokespersons also confirmed that such problems were already known on hot days and appealed to guests to take a closer look when parking.
Tips for the heat wave
Especially in times of extreme heat, as predicted by the meteorologists from the German Weather Service in other parts of Germany, it is important to pay attention to your health. The daily news recommends that older people in particular ensure adequate fluid intake, as they are particularly at risk. Two to three liters a day is ideal, with mineral water and herbal teas preferred, while sugary drinks and alcohol should be avoided.
Switching to lighter foods, such as fruits and vegetables, can also help relieve symptoms in extreme temperatures. And for everyone who goes to the outdoor pool: If the humidity is oppressive, you should resort to cooling measures, such as wet towels on the neck, to at least cool yourself down a little.
Bathing season in the Raffteichbad
The swimming season in the Raffteich outdoor pool started on May 22, 2019 and has attracted many swimmers since then. Regular opening hours are Monday to Friday from 6 a.m. to 8 p.m. and on weekends from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. If there is less than three hours of sunshine, the pool stays open in the early hours of the morning, so early swimmers can also get their money's worth. The Bürgerpark outdoor pool opened its doors a little earlier, on April 29, 2019, and remains ready for swimming fun every day.
When the Raffteich pool opens, the so-called pool traffic light is activated, which provides information about whether the pools are open or not. This can be found under stadtbad-bs.de/baederampel can be viewed.
Despite the challenges that the heat brings, the people of Braunschweig rely on their pools and take advantage of the opportunities offered to them. So it remains to be seen how the coming hot days will develop.
