Redesign of the Hagenmarkt: Braunschweig's green oasis awakens!
The redesign of the Hagenmarkt in Braunschweig is progressing quickly. The urban project, which will last 13 months, has a budget of 5.1 million euros. This place lost a lot of its charm due to the storm “Xavier” eight years ago. Now it is to be upgraded with new plantings, relaxation and play areas around the Heinrichsbrunnen. The design comes from the creative pen of a Berlin landscape architect who wants to bring a breath of fresh air into the city. News38 reports that ...
Archaeological excavations that began in October 2024 provide exciting insights into the square's past. Some historical remains, including parts of the once magnificent ducal opera house, have already been discovered. These foundations and remains of walls indicate that significant construction phases took place here over the centuries, including possibly in the 18th and 19th centuries. Archeology and urban history
The discovery of the former opera house, which was valued as a national venue and went down in history with performances of Lessing's "Emilia Galotti" and Goethe's "Faust I", adds cultural and historical value. Klaus Hornung, head of the cityscape and monument preservation department, emphasizes that the exact positions of the building edges do not correspond to the historical maps - more comprehensive investigations are needed here. The excavations are particularly important because they promise new knowledge about the city's history.
As part of the redesign, the area around the Heinrichsbrunnen will be unsealed and around 80 new trees and bushes will be added. In addition, rainwater management is being set up, which must open the areas up to two and a half meters deep for the new plants. In doing so, the city hopes to improve not only the aesthetics but also the functionality of the square. The construction work will also affect the surrounding streets and intersections, which will result in some traffic delays, particularly on Bohlweg.
Mixed reactions to the project
However, the city is receiving mixed reactions to the planned changes. While some citizens support the new green space, others express criticism and ridicule on social media. The need to renew the Hagenmarkt is often discussed, which can be seen not only as a visual upgrade, but also as an overhaul of the city's history.
The planned completion is scheduled for 2026. As part of the project, public information events are also planned to bring the results of the archaeological work closer to citizens and provide insight into the uncovered history of the city. The redesign of the Hagenmarkt could therefore not only be an architectural but also a living history chapter for Braunschweig.
