Of traffic jams and bargains: Experience the mega flea market in Braunschweig!
The flea market in Braunschweig again attracted numerous visitors and sellers on September 6th and 7th, 2025. On Sunday morning, September 7th, the alarm clock rang at 4:55 a.m. for our author and his two friends, who wanted to make their way to the popular Harz and Heide flea market. After scouring their home for unnecessary treasures and loading a trailer with bric-a-brac, trestle tables and camp chairs, they set off at 5:30 a.m. After a 20-minute drive, they reached the Gartenstadt exit and were excited to see what was happening.
However, there was a heavy traffic jam on site on Theodor-Heuss-Strasse as construction sites caused an enormous hindrance to traffic. The first update came at 6:16 a.m.: After 30 minutes they had only progressed 500 meters. The shock quickly grew when they saw the exhibition center in all its splendor at 6:50 a.m. - it was already full of vendors and exhibitors. They finally made it to the site at 7:30 a.m. where they had to wait for their seat assignment.
Crowd of visitors contrary to expectations
The flea market expected an incredible number of visitors, between 35,000 and 50,000 were forecast, and a total of 2,500 sellers had set up their stands. Despite the large number of visitors, the mood among the staff was tense as only a few employees were available. The author and his friends had set up their stand on the edge behind a tree, which proved to be disadvantageous as only a few passersby passed by. Nevertheless, a friendly neighbor offered cake, which sweetened the day a little.
At 10 a.m. we finally got the first glimpse of the full site – the excitement grew! Unfortunately, at the end of the day, sales still fell short of expectations: less than 100 euros after the stand fee was deducted. But despite this sobering result, everyone was satisfied with the beautiful weather and the shared experience. The group set off on the return journey at 2:30 p.m. and can look back on an exciting, albeit challenging, day.
A look at the organizers
The agency Maué from Lüneburg was responsible for organizing the flea market, which was also responsible for the planning and implementation in cooperation with various partners. Events like this will take place on several dates in 2025, including October 3rd to 5th, with sales of new goods not permitted on all three days. The prices for stand fees vary: on Saturdays the price is €8.00 per linear meter and on Sundays and public holidays it is €10.00. A minimum stand of 3 meters must be booked at the Sunday markets.
So if you would like to take part in one of the upcoming markets, please note that all inquiries and reservations are processed centrally by the Maué Agency. Contact options are straightforward via email or telephone, even if the office is temporarily closed throughout the year.
The flea market remains a major attraction in the region, attracting not only bargain hunters but also families and friends looking for a fun day out. This keeps the tradition alive and the anticipation for the next dates is already palpable.
