Warning about oak processionary moths: dangers for Braunschweig!

Extreme caution is advised in the city of Braunschweig at the moment, as the oak processionary moth caterpillars are in full swing. As t-online.de reports, these voracious fellows are particularly active until the end of July or beginning of August and have spread out in the city's oak trees. A danger that should not be underestimated, which comes primarily from the fine stinging hairs of the caterpillars, which are considered extremely allergenic.

The prickly hairs of oak processionary moths, which emerge from the third larval stage, can not only cause itchy skin rashes and redness, but can also trigger respiratory symptoms such as coughing and sore throats. In some cases, asthma attacks can even occur, as NetDoktor points out. It is therefore advisable to be extremely careful when in contact with the caterpillars.

Dangers and symptoms

As a lot of information from AOK makes clear, contact with the stinging hairs can lead to caterpillar dermatitis, which often affects uncovered areas of the body such as the neck, face and arms. The symptoms manifest themselves in the form of hives, blisters and severe itching. In some cases, allergic reactions such as hives may occur 15 to 60 minutes after contact.

Risk groups such as children playing, walkers, residents in forest areas and even forest workers are particularly at risk. The stinging hairs break off easily and can be spread over long distances by the wind, so that contact does not even have to be direct with the caterpillars or nests.

Precautions and instructions

The city of Braunschweig has already taken several measures to combat the problem. Cordoned off areas, such as affected parks and schools, should be avoided at all costs. In facilities such as daycare centers, hospitals and retirement homes, nests are removed within 24 hours, while in residential areas this process occurs within 48 hours. The areas particularly affected include the northern part of the city park and the market square area on Herzogin-Elisabeth-Straße.

All citizens can report suspected cases or findings by calling 0531/470-1 or 0531/115 or by email to buergertelefon@braunschweig.de. In addition, it is advisable to take the first preventative measures in the first half of May, for example by using nematodes in the oak crowns. The city is confident that these measures will not put people at risk.

The information on the distribution of the oak processionary moth and the necessary preventive measures is particularly important because, although the caterpillars occur throughout Braunschweig, they cannot be removed immediately everywhere. However, with a watchful eye and the necessary caution, the dangers can be kept at bay.
