Major fire in Delmenhorst: 91 residents safely evacuated!
In Delmenhorst, a smoldering fire broke out in the basement area of a shared accommodation on Friday evening. According to NWZonline, there were 91 residents in the building at the time of the incident, all of whom were evacuated uninjured. The fire brigade arrived quickly on the scene and prevented the fire, which had started at a transformer system, from spreading. According to initial investigations, a primitive technical defect could be the cause of the fire.
The consequences of the scorching fire were nevertheless significant: the entire power supply in the shared accommodation and also in the adjacent buildings failed. This not only means more than just usual amenities, but also the need to quickly provide alternative accommodation. The city of Delmenhorst acted quickly and moved the residents into empty shared accommodation until the power supply was restored.
The impact on the community
The incident not only affected the residents affected, but also private and public transport in the inner city area. For this reason, the fire department and police were on site with a large contingent to keep the situation under control. Fortunately, there were no injuries and all 91 residents were evacuated in time.
However, this incident also serves as a reminder of the importance of security in such shelters. In this context, reference is made to the handout “Designing communal accommodation safely – safety technology, organization and operation”, which deals with important aspects of fire protection and the structural and organizational design of communal accommodation. This guidance from the Polizei-Beratungsportal aims to ensure the greatest possible protection for residents and employees.
What can we do?
Safety in shared accommodation is an issue that certainly should not be ignored. Operators are required to create security concepts and choose security measures that are adapted to local conditions. The above-mentioned handout also provides examples of structural precautions that, in combination with a good organizational concept, can help minimize the risks.
In the coming days, the city of Delmenhorst will do everything in its power to restore the power supply as quickly as possible so that residents can quickly return to their familiar surroundings. Until then, it is hoped that such an incident will not recur and that security precautions will continue to be improved.
