S-Bahn vortex: track construction leads to massive restrictions in November!
Secrets, disruptions and diversions – there is once again a lot going on in German rail traffic! In the coming days, commuters and travelers in the Hanover area will have to prepare for some restrictions. Loud Deister echo There will be changes to the timetable between October 31 and November 5, 2025 due to urgently needed track construction work on several S-Bahn lines.
The S2 line will only be used to a limited extent during this time, as the route between Hannover Hbf and Weetzen is single-track. Travelers are asked to limit themselves to trips between Haste and Weetzen and between Hanover Hbf and Nienburg (Weser). The following also applies to lines S21 and S51: There will be complete cancellations from November 3rd to 5th. The latter will not run between Hannover-Bismarckstrasse and Hameln during this period; instead, a diversion to Hannover Messe/Laatzen will be offered.
Alternative travel options
There are a few alternatives for everyone who still depends on the train during the above-mentioned period. It is recommended to use lines S1 and S5. Particularly practical: In Weetzen you can change from the S5 to the S2 in order to continue towards Haste. But it's not just during this time that the passengers' nerves could be put to the test. Between October 26th and 30th and November 9th to 13th, travelers must expect isolated late evening connections to be canceled.
The S5 lines are affected – especially between Hannover Hbf and Hameln – as well as the S1 between Hannover Hbf and Weetzen. A rail replacement service (SEV) will be set up here, which can be used for the affected journeys.
The punctuality of Deutsche Bahn
While the construction work and the associated changes cause disruption in operations, Deutsche Bahn (DB) also has to deal with repeated criticism of its punctuality. Reports, as in BR Reading shows that the DB is often criticized. There have been allegations in the past that the railway manipulates its statistics by deliberately withdrawing trains from service in order to improve punctuality rates. Union representatives were particularly critical, describing such practices as an “open secret” in internal chats.
Although the DB has emphasized that trains are not intentionally canceled to embellish statistics, the reasons for delays are multifaceted - from congested routes to labor law concerns for train crews. In the last few months, only just under a third of long-distance trains were on time.
