Storm warning for Hildesheim: Gusts of up to 90 km/h are threatening today!
Turbulent weather awaits people in the Hildesheim district and beyond. This Sunday, October 26, 2025, the German Weather Service (DWD) published a warning forecast warning of violent gusts of between 55 and 70 km/h from 8 a.m. onwards. As the day progresses, the winds shift from southwest to west, and with showers, gusts of up to 80 km/h are possible at higher altitudes. The first warning from the DWD is valid until 8 p.m., which is followed by a second storm warning from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., which denounces gusts of up to 75 km/h in exposed locations even up to 90 km/h, which is equivalent to a wind force of 10. It will also remain uncomfortable in the evening with windy conditions and gusts of around 55 km/h, which can occasionally rise to 70 km/h by midnight.
But it's not just in Hildesheim that the wind is blowing, it's also turbulent throughout northern Germany. According to NDR, storm surges could threaten on Sunday, with corresponding warnings already being issued by the Federal Maritime and Hydrographic Agency (BSH). On the East Frisian coast as well as in the areas of the Weser and Elbe, floods of up to 1.5 meters above mean high water are to be expected. This also applies to the St. Pauli gauge in Hamburg, where the water is only 25 cm above the storm surge mark and the first floods can already be observed in the fish market.
Preparations and Dangers
The signs are clear: loose items should be secured and covers reinforced. The DWD strongly advises against staying outdoors during the weather warning. Particularly in heavily wooded areas where there is a risk of falling branches and flying objects, increased caution and avoiding forests are advisable. The Hamburg mayor of Hallig Hooge, Michael Klisch, described the situation as “nothing special” because these weather conditions occur three to five times a year and there is a summer dike that offers protection. Nevertheless, all the cows on Hooge were driven onto terps to keep them safe.
According to the information from the Severe Weather Center, there is an overview of all storm and hurricane warnings in Germany, which are divided into advance warnings and acute warnings. Experts emphasize that detailed forecasts are of utmost importance for numerous industries, such as construction, agriculture, forestry and insurance.
Traffic disruptions and impacts on public life
The stormy weather has already had its first noticeable effects. In many cities, including Hildesheim and Hanover, cemeteries, parks and zoos were closed, and several weekly markets were canceled. The ferry connections in the region are also among the big losers - numerous timetables for trips to the North Sea islands had to be adjusted or canceled completely. Cruise ships like the “AIDAperla” have shortened their itineraries and are returning to Hamburg earlier.
The Lower Saxony State Forests also warn urgently about the dangers posed by weakened trees that could potentially fall. Drivers also have to be prepared for disruptions caused by the wind on the roads. The ADAC recommends driving particularly carefully and avoiding forest areas, as increased return traffic is to be expected, especially on the A7 and A1 motorways.
Overall, it can be said that autumn is showing its stormy side, and while coastal countries are well prepared for upcoming storm surges, climate change is increasing the challenges in coastal protection. Preparations and precautionary measures are therefore advisable in order to get through this rough weather situation safely.
