Osnabrück is starting a large-scale expansion of the e-charging infrastructure by 2030!

A real step forward for electromobility in the Osnabrück district! At the Lower Saxony E-MOBILITY SUMMIT 2025 in Hanover, Thomas Könnecker, the district councilor, presented the newly developed expansion strategies for the public charging infrastructure. This strategy, which was developed in close cooperation with the Lower Saxony State Authority for Road Construction and Transport (NLStBV), has a clear goal: to systematically advance electromobility in the region by 2030 and to significantly expand the charging infrastructure. As Wirtschaft Aktuell explains, the importance of close municipal cooperation is particularly emphasized.

District Administrator Anna Könnecker emphasizes how important a coordinated approach at the municipal level is in order to optimize the result. NLStBV President Timo Quander states that these strategies form the basis for the rapid expansion of the public charging network. The plan includes a comprehensive analysis of possible locations for new charging stations, always keeping the needs of the region in mind.

Clarity through needs analysis and collaboration

In order to determine the future need for charging power and identify suitable areas, a detailed needs analysis was carried out. The technical feasibility has also already been examined in coordination with the responsible electricity network operator. These extensive steps are necessary to ensure that the newly planned charging stations meet the needs of electric-driving citizens.

The results of the analyzes should also serve as a basis for private investments and the awarding of concessions. Energy supply companies are called upon to set up both fast and normal charging points according to the chosen concepts. The cooperation between the municipalities and the state should be further intensified in the future, which not only benefits the region but could also serve as an example for other regions.

A comprehensive network as the goal

The implementation of electromobility is also a central component of the federal government's climate protection program. With a forecast of 14.8 million battery-electric vehicles and plug-in hybrids in Germany by 2030, the need for a comprehensive and efficient charging infrastructure is becoming increasingly clear. According to the Lower Saxony Ministry of Economic Affairs, an extensive development of the charging infrastructure is being promoted, with Niedersachsen.de also pointing to the support of private charging processes.

A comprehensive network of market players in the automotive and mobility industries should also accelerate the establishment of the necessary charging points. For sustainable mobility in North Rhine-Westphalia, it is crucial to achieve the goal of one million charging points by 2030. These are an indispensable part of the infrastructure for electric vehicles, because a well-developed charging infrastructure significantly increases the acceptance of electric cars. It is also interesting that the majority of charging stations are installed in private households, while public fast charging only accounts for 20% of charging processes.

Overall, it shows that the Osnabrück district and Lower Saxony are on a very good path to advancing electromobility. The expansion of the charging infrastructure is not only necessary, but also of central importance for the further development of electromobility in Germany.
