Herd protection information day in Himbergen: Tips against wolf attacks!

On Wednesday, November 5, 2025, a herd protection information day will take place in Himbergen, which is aimed at private livestock owners and pasture-raising farmers in their main and part-time jobs. Organized by the Uelzen district and the Lower Saxony Chamber of Agriculture (LWK), this event offers a valuable platform to receive practical tips on the wolf problem. As the Uelzen press reported, there are no fees for participants and prior registration is not required.

The event takes place at the Strampe plant in Brockhimbergen and lasts from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Here the participants are provided with comprehensive knowledge about wolf-repellent fences by a team of livestock protection consultants from LWK. In addition to theoretical input, practical demonstrations are also on the program. Visitors can learn how to properly assemble, electrify and ground wire fences, and which mobile fences can be used effectively.

Support from local actors

The event is supported by various institutions, including the hunters' association of the Uelzen district, the farmers' association of Northeast Lower Saxony, district foresters of the LWK and local wolf advisors. This broad support shows how important the issue is for the entire region.

In view of the growing wolf population in Germany, which numbers around 209 packs, 46 wolf pairs and 19 territorial individuals in the 2023/2024 monitoring year, many animal owners are facing challenges. The Federal Agency for Agriculture and Food points out that the number of attacks on farm animals has increased significantly in recent years. From 40 attacks in 2006, we have now reached around 1,268 attacks with around 5,727 wounded and killed animals in 2023.

Financial support and prevention measures

Herd protection measures were funded in Germany with around 18.5 million euros in 2023. In 2022, the compensation payments for livestock attacks amounted to around 637,000 euros. These numbers highlight the economic challenges that livestock farmers face. The GAK framework plan promotes, among other things, preventative approaches such as the purchase of livestock protection dogs or the construction of wolf-repellent protective fences.

In addition, significant investments are made in livestock guard dogs, the acquisition costs of which are around 4,000 euros and around 1,000 euros are incurred annually for keeping them. These measures are important not only for the protection of animals, but also for the stability of pasture farming in general.

With a wide range of information and practical assistance, the Herd Protection Information Day offers a valuable opportunity to discuss possible solutions between nature conservation and agriculture. Therefore, all interested livestock owners and farmers should take the time to take part in this event and find out about the latest developments and support offers.
