Martensdamm in Kiel: New measures for more safety in traffic!

The Martensdamm in Kiel is facing a fundamental change that should significantly improve pedestrians' feeling of safety. Due to the difficult visibility, especially in the curve at the Holsten Bridge, many pedestrians feel unsafe in this area. Statistically, the section is not particularly accident-prone, but the wide roadway and the structural conditions make it difficult for passers-by to make a reliable traffic assessment. The city of Kiel has now announced measures to change this situation.

The planned improvements include the construction of two pedestrian islands in the middle of the street and the marking of a zebra crossing. These changes are planned for next spring and are intended to make Martensdamm significantly safer. The application for implementation was unanimously approved two years ago in the Committee for the Environment, Climate Protection and Mobility. However, implementation was delayed due to necessary adjustments to the road traffic regulations, which was also commented on by the city of Kiel.

Security measures for citizens

The new pedestrian islands are designed to provide pedestrians with a safe way to cross the street, while the zebra crossing ensures that drivers are encouraged to give way to pedestrians. This is particularly important in an area where many people use the street to move between neighboring neighborhoods.

The city administration has emphasized that these measures not only serve to increase citizens' sense of security, but also take into account the general traffic situation in the area. While the wide roadway and special curves cause confusion, the traffic flow on site remains stable.

Open questions and perspectives

The implementation of the measures has kept citizens and traffic planners equally busy. The previous proposal was a first step in the right direction, but the additional adjustments to traffic legislation were necessary to actually increase road safety.

Finally, it remains to be hoped that the planned measures will actually be implemented as planned and that pedestrians in Kiel can benefit from a safer crossing of Martensdamm. These steps towards greater security could reduce the diffuse feeling of insecurity for many passers-by and help all citizens feel more comfortable in their city.
