Construction starts for Ikareum: Anklam's historic church becomes a modern museum!
In Anklam, the St. Nicholas Church is currently undergoing an impressive transformation. The third phase of the renovation is in full swing and promises to transform the historic church building into a modern museum. The aim is to use the Nikolaikirche as an exhibition and event building and to establish it as a new location for the Otto Lilienthal Museum. The total costs of the renovation amount to an impressive 10.5 million euros, which are to be invested by 2027. Uckermarkkurier reports that ...
The renovation includes numerous measures, including the installation of galleries as new exhibition levels and a glass elevator that makes access easier. A significant step forward for Anklam, where the idea for the Ikareum was born in the 1990s when a location was being sought for the then newly founded Lilienthal Museum. Approaches to conversion and feasibility were previously examined in the 2000s. Nikolaikirche Anklam further states that...
A diverse center for aviation and culture
What can visitors expect in the Ikareum? Clearly, the focus is on the legacy of Otto Lilienthal, an aviation pioneer. His birthplace was once in front of the west gate of St. Nicholas Church, and the museum will keep the connection to the cultural history of human flight alive. The pilot exhibition “Lilienthal LAB”, which has already opened, offers an exciting insight into Lilienthal’s life, while the permanent exhibition “LebensWege” describes the social and cultural work of the Lilienthals. The Lilienthal Museum informs that…
With a converted church tower that will function as a viewing and exhibition tower, the Ikareum will not only offer high educational value, but also act as an architectural highlight. The new spaces created after the renovation are also intended to enable a variety of uses and to offer the Anklam public and tourists a varied program.
About the start of construction and future challenges
The ceremonial start of construction of the renovation work took place on Thursday, with a time capsule being locked in a safe to give future generations a glimpse of the past. Culture Minister Bettina Martin had announced her participation, but canceled at short notice. Instead, state parliament member Jeannine Rösler gave a welcoming speech and underlined the importance of the project for the region. Nevertheless, the city of Anklam continues to rely on co-financing from the state, especially for the fourth construction phase, which has not yet been financed and which, among other things, includes a new church spire.
A look into the future shows that Prime Minister Manuela Schwesig is planning the inauguration of the new regional information and tourism center (RITZ) for mid-July. This will show how Anklam can flourish culturally and touristically, and the Ikareum will certainly be a central attraction where history and future join hands.
