Anklam sugar factory: record harvest and high quality despite price pressure!

A fruitful season is coming to an end: The Anklam sugar factory's beet campaign is recording impressive successes. Since its launch on September 8, over 920,000 tonnes of beets have been processed so far, representing more than half of the expected total for this season. The average daily processing is around 13,500 tonnes, with a harvest that is impressive.

Sugar beet yields reach a remarkable 80 tons per hectare, while the sugar content is around 17.5 percent. This means that the sugar factory in Anklam is taking a big step closer to its target of a sugar yield of around 14 tons per hectare. The regional differences cannot be overlooked: In the Uckermark, particularly high yields are achieved, thanks to an optimal water supply. That's what he reports Northern Courier.

Record numbers and challenges

When sugar factory Cosun Beet Company (CBC) recently announced the final figures for the beet campaign, the results were groundbreaking. Over 1.9 million tons of sugar beet were processed and almost 300,000 tons of sugar were produced. These figures set new standards and underline the performance of the Anklamer Fabrik, which is the only sugar factory in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania. In addition to sugar, thin and thick juice as well as animal feed also came from production.

Processing performance made a notable leap, especially after technical issues led to a four-day shutdown early in the campaign. With an additional steam boiler, production was increased significantly, reaching record levels of 15,600 tons of beets per day on some days. Matthias Sauer, Managing Director of the CBC, is satisfied with the campaign and the high quality of the sugar beets Baltic Sea newspaper reported.

Economic framework conditions

Nevertheless, the industry faces some challenges. Falling sugar prices are putting a strain on the economic viability of production both in the EU internal market and worldwide. Managing director Michael Engel emphasizes the difficulties of operating profitably at these prices and the need to make production processes more efficient.

With around 340 farms supplying the Anklam sugar factory and more than 200 employees, the factory is an important part of the regional economy. To secure the future of production, the company is planning an efficiency program to increase processing capacity. The processing of organically grown sugar beets has also found space this season through a targeted interruption from November 11th to 13th, which additionally contributes to added value.

Overall, it can be seen that the sugar beet campaign in Anklam was successful in terms of both the quantity and the quality of the beets. However, the challenges arising from the global market still remain and require innovative solutions. The Anklam sugar factory remains a central element in the region's food chain and agriculture, which continues to focus on quality and efficiency.
