Youngest mayor in MV: Karoline Koreng sworn in at the age of 30

A significant generational change has taken place in the tranquil community of Neverin in the Mecklenburg Lake District. On Wednesday evening, Karoline Koreng was elected as the municipality's new mayor. At just 30 years old, she is the youngest honorary mayor in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania. As the daily news reports, she received an impressive 79.8 percent of the vote in her election and will succeed Nico Klose, who is now the full-time mayor of Neubrandenburg.

Koreng, who is a healthcare worker by profession, can provide a breath of fresh air and new ideas. Her first official act was an exciting decision: Since there was no winner after three rounds of voting for the second deputy mayor, the decision had to be made by lot. The luck fell on Ines Frenzel, also from the “Citizens for Neverin” voting group.

A look at women in local politics

The appointment of Karoline Koreng is part of a larger trend in German local politics, in which the proportion of female mayors is continually increasing in importance. Current estimates show that the proportion of women in the mayor's office in Germany is only 13.5 percent. This means that fewer than one in seven congregations are led by a woman. As the German Association of Cities and Municipalities explains, for example, the highest proportions of women can be observed in Schleswig-Holstein and Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, at 18.3 percent each.

  • Mecklenburg-Vorpommern: 18,3 % Frauenanteil
  • Brandenburg: 16,4 % Frauenanteil
  • Sachsen-Anhalt: 15,2 % Frauenanteil
  • Niedersachsen: 15,2 % Frauenanteil
  • Saarland: 6,6 % Frauenanteil (niedrigster Wert)

However, there is still much to be done to promote equality in local politics. Simon Stocker, research associate at the University of Stuttgart, emphasizes that a systematic survey is needed to accurately record the proportion of female mayors and to be able to react accordingly.

With Karoline Koreng, a young, dynamic personality has now taken the lead at Neverin. The community can look forward to seeing how they tackle the challenges with fresh enthusiasm and their experience in the healthcare sector. Her election could serve as an inspiration for many other communities to increase the proportion of female leaders and further strengthen the role of women in politics.
