Ex-boyfriend stabs 100 times: murder trial shocks Lower Saxony!

In a shocking case, the Osnabrück regional court sentenced a 27-year-old man to 13 years in prison for the murder of his 23-year-old ex-girlfriend. The incident occurred in June 2023 when the defendant killed his former partner with over 100 stab wounds. The judges saw the dastardly murder as a given, with previous mental illnesses and the influence of alcohol playing a role on the day of the crime. The man had stopped taking medication for depressive episodes before the crime and confessed that he wanted to stop the woman from leaving his apartment. He committed the crime because he was overwhelmed and under the influence of alcohol. He called the emergency number himself, but the emergency doctor was no longer able to help the woman.

The tragedy surrounding this case shines a bright light on the widespread problem of alcohol-related aggression in Germany. According to a report by Ärzteblatt, one in three acts of violence in 2011 took place under the influence of alcohol. Such aggressive attacks not only lead to personal suffering, but also cause immense socio-economic costs. In addition, a study shows that violent behavior occurs in 16 to 50 percent of cases among alcohol-dependent men. The interaction between alcohol abuse and aggression is complex, but acute alcohol intoxication plays a critical role in approximately half of all violent crimes worldwide.

The number of violent crimes is increasing

The numbers are alarming: According to the yearbook Addiction, there were over 110 murders and almost 500 homicides in Germany in 2022, with a significant increase in crimes under the influence of alcohol compared to previous years. The number of arsons under the influence of alcohol doubled from 2021 to 2022 to almost 1,000. By the way, these statistics only refer to the cases recorded by the police - the actual number of unreported cases is probably much higher, especially in the case of rape and serious physical injuries.

Professor Dr. Martin Rettenberger and his colleague Hanna Verzagt examined the connection between alcohol consumption and violent crime and found that aggressive individuals often seek social environments in which excessive alcohol consumption is prevalent. Social exclusion and the lack of positive social contacts can drive drug addicts and violent people into subcultural groups, which further exacerbates the problem.

A social problem

Unfortunately, alcohol is still widespread in everyday life, even if consumption is declining in the long term. However, the risk of violent acts caused by alcohol consumption remains high. This is a challenge that society cannot ignore. Therapeutic approaches that strengthen cognitive processes and address the neurobiological basis of aggression are crucial for the rehabilitation of alcohol-dependent patients.

In conclusion, the case of the 27-year-old man is not an isolated case. More than 100 women lose their lives every year in Germany at the hands of partners or ex-partners, and it is high time to take these alarming developments seriously. Only long-term social dialogue and preventive measures can help prevent such tragedies in the future.
