Discussion about off-leash dog areas in Wilhelmshaven: What happens now?

In Wilhelmshaven, discussions about off-leash areas for dogs are in full swing. The focus is on the supposedly planned area on Flensburger Grün, where residents of Flensburger Straße and Kathrinenfeld have contacted the council chairman with collected signatures. Despite these concerns, the Finance Committee made it clear at a meeting that there are currently no official plans that provide for an additional off-leash area for dogs. The administration presented an information template that names the Flensburg Green and an area on Friedenstrasse as potential locations. However, at 3,200 square meters, both areas are the only ones that meet the requirements in terms of size and possibility of fencing. Nine of the eleven areas examined were excluded due to unfavorable conditions, as reported by NWZonline.

The topic of dog off-leash areas is explosive, especially since there was an application from the “Die Bunten” council group from June 2022 that was specifically aimed at making it easier for owners to use off-leash areas. However, city planning officer Niksa Marusic emphasized that the present template is only informative and there is therefore no need for a decision. A discussion about a possible postponement was not considered necessary as there is currently no concrete application for the development of an additional off-leash area for dogs. Nevertheless, council chairman Stefan Becker has indicated that an application could be brought forward after the summer break.

Requests for more outdoor areas

The Independent Voters' Association (UWG) has also commented on the issue and welcomes the Greens' call for additional dog areas in Wilhelmshaven. UWG councilor Horst Walzner has raised these concerns several times in the TBW committee and in the council, but so far there has been no concrete majority for implementation. Walzner is skeptical about the Greens' plans to create outdoor areas every kilometer, as there may not be enough suitable green spaces. The UWG is committed to ensuring that there is an off-leash area for dogs in every district and also calls for the desire for a dog beach. Currently, dog owners have to go to Hooksiel, according to UWG.

All in all, it shows that the city of Wilhelmshaven has a lot to do to meet the needs of its four-legged residents. It remains to be hoped that the discussions will soon be followed by the necessary decisions.
