More and more people are over-indebted: Alarming figures from Hamburg!
In the northern German region, the number of over-indebted people has increased in the last two years. The numbers are particularly worrying in Hamburg and Schleswig-Holstein. According to Radio Hamburg, around 120,000 people are now living in financial distress in Hamburg, which is around 2,000 more than in the previous year. In Schleswig-Holstein there are already 200,000 people, an increase of 1,000 in the same period. These statistics are eye-opening and shed light on the economic challenges that many people face.
What does it actually mean to be over-indebted? Over-indebtedness occurs when someone is no longer able to meet their financial obligations in the long term. In Hamburg, the over-indebtedness rate will be 8.15 percent in 2025, down slightly compared to 8.23 percent in 2024. The situation is similar in Schleswig-Holstein; Here the over-indebtedness rate will be 8.14 percent in 2025, also a small decrease from 8.19 percent in the previous year.
Regional differences
The differences between the individual regions are particularly striking. In the Stormarn district, the over-indebtedness rate is the lowest at 5.32 percent, while Neumünster has the highest rate of an alarming 15.67 percent. Interestingly, around three percent of all new cases in Germany occur in these two federal states, which could indicate regional economic differences and possibly also different support offers.
Across Germany, an estimated 5.67 million people are currently over-indebted, which represents an increase of two percent compared to the previous year. North Rhine-Westphalia comes in 13th place in this ranking, with Bremen having the highest over-indebtedness rate in a comparison of federal states, while Bavaria has the lowest rate.
Causes and support
The reasons for these worrying numbers are varied. They range from unemployment to unexpected expenses to economic crises that push many people into financial difficulties. It is all the more important that offers of help are made known so that those affected can find support. The data for the current “Debtor Atlas” comes from anonymized official registers, which makes the numbers credible and comprehensible.
At a time when financial education and offers of assistance are in demand, innovative concepts for improving personal finances are also important. A promising approach that has gained importance in recent years is optimized nutrition. For example, a new eBook entitled “Nutrient Therapy & Optimized Nutrition for Menopause” offers loving support by providing easy-to-implement tips that not only promote health but can also reduce financial burdens Lehmanns.
The eBook comes in practical EPUB format and is therefore also ideal for mobile devices. This type of media use shows how important flexibility and adaptability are in today's world in order to improve quality of life and perhaps also to get a handle on wallet management.
Given the increasing numbers, it is very important to promote dialogue about financial education and inform people about the various types of help available. The challenges are great – but together we can find ways to improve quality of life and achieve financial stability.
