Problem child Herrenseebrücke: closure and new traffic restrictions!

In Waren an der Müritz there are currently serious problems with the Herrenseebrücke, which is now closed to traffic. This was revealed by the regular bridge inspection, which pointed to worrying cracks in the bridge body. Mayor Norbert Möller (SPD) informed that experts had urgently recommended closing the bridge in order to minimize dangers for road users. The Herrenseebrücke spans the railway line between Berlin and Rostock and has proven to be a problem child for the city over the years. Now another step is necessary to ensure security. The bridge was built in the 1970s and renovated 15 years ago. Elastic concrete was used, similar to the infamous Carola Bridge in Dresden, which also had major problems.

The situation is important not only for the bridge itself, but also for the surrounding infrastructure. In Warener Nordstadt there is, among other things, the hospital, two schools as well as several hotels and the police station. Companies such as the Mecklenburger Backstuben and the Möwe pasta factory are also based here. The bridge closure could temporarily significantly shift traffic flows in the region.

Further traffic restrictions

How Northern Courier reports, a far-reaching signage plan is already in the works that will provide for new traffic restrictions, particularly for heavy goods vehicles. The increased traffic on the bridge represents a further problem, as a particularly large number of heavy trucks drive over the bridge. This is due, among other things, to the ban on passage for trucks over twelve tons on the Schweriner Damm (B192). Mayor Möller plans to implement the new guidelines quickly so that traffic signs can be installed in the next four to six weeks.

A 400-page expert report provides a well-founded analysis of the current situation. Among other things, the following recommendations are made:

  • Beibehaltung der Geschwindigkeitsbegrenzung von 30 km/h.
  • Tonnagebegrenzung auf 16 Tonnen.
  • Abstandsgebot für Lkw von mindestens 50 Metern.

Future of the Herrenseebrücke

The predicted lifespan of the Herrenseebrücke is still around 20 years, but it is urgently necessary to move forward with planning for a possible new bridge. Strategies must also be developed to improve the transport connections to Waren Nord. Future special tests are already planned in order to be able to react to possible problems at an early stage. In this respect, the crack formation resulting from a partial renovation in 1998/99 represents a particular challenge as it makes potential damage more difficult to detect.

The city is therefore facing a comprehensive challenge that affects both the security of its citizens and the economic connectivity of the region. The next steps must therefore be considered and implemented promptly in order to find the best possible solution for everyone involved. The Herrenseebrücke therefore remains a central issue for the city and the residents.
